The towers and ramparts of Aigues-Mortes
Since the Middle Ages, Aigues-Mortes has been a strategic location for the Kingdom of France. Charlemagne, in 791, erected the first tower : the Matafère tower, to ensure the safety of fishermen. The construction of the city then progressed gradually with the construction of various towers and ramparts by Saint Louis starting from 1272. Aigues-Mortes offers a pleasant visit along the Rhône to Sète canal. The more adventurous can take the path of the ramparts that circles the city and offers exceptional views of the Camargue Natural Park.
