A waterway cruise on the Göta Kanal, discovering the country of 100,000 lakes

We’ll give you all the tips for captaining your rental houseboat at our Motala base. In both cases, you’ll navigate the Göta Kanal, one of the jewels of Swedish heritage, dug in the first half of the 19th century. Prepare your itinerary and let yourself be guided by your momentary desires as you organise stopping points during your cruise. The 7 locks of Berg or the manual lock of Borensberg will be unforgettable stages of the journey for all members of your crew. As with everywhere else, a waterway cruise in Sweden will also offer you the opportunity to indulge in all your favourite activities : with over 100,000 lakes, Sweden represents a paradise for fishing, as well as hiking and cycling (the towpath along Göta Kanal means you can look forward to some beautiful walks and rides).

Sport, culture and Nature : the secrets of a successful river cruise in Sweden

Plan your stops as you travel through some of the most spectacular sites along your route. Visit the museum in Motala where you’ll be able to discover the canal’s history. Karlsborg will give you access to one of the largest fortresses in Europe. This building, from the beginning of the 19th century, covers over 100 hectares and exploring it will be a highlight of your cruise. You can also allow yourself to be seduced by the medieval town of Vadstena. In addition to its imposing castle, you’ll discover the remains of the first convent of the Order of Saint Bridget. Finally, to give every member of your crew the opportunity to really enjoy your Swedish waterway cruise, you can take advantage of the many nautical bases built around the lakes you’ll cross.

Berg Locks

Berg Locks

Just a few kilometres from the town of Linköping, you’ll discover the Berg locks, a jewel of human genius and testimony to the craftsmanship of the workers who built the Göta Kanal, an iconic landmark of Sweden. To reach Lake Roxen and the nautical bases where you can indulge in the pleasures of swimming and other water activities, you’ll need to travel through this series of 8 locks. The height difference here is more than 30 metres, overcome by this ingenious system of successive locks. The Berg locks are just some of the 58 locks to be discovered on the 190 kilometres making up this canal.
