As its name indi­cates, the town of, Pon­tailler-sur-Saône devel­oped over the cen­turies along the Saône, one of the best rivers in France for water­way tourism. Its first inhab­i­tants, the Gauls, set­tled sev­er­al cen­turies ago at the top of Mount Ardoux.
